Darshana Natural Moisturizing Hair Line Curlie Review

November 17, 2016

A long, long time ago, the sages of Indian developed Ayurveda: Ayur means life; and veda means science or knowledge.  Before modern medicine came into existence and proved scientifically what ancient peoples have known for thousands of years, this ‘science of life’ was based on the mind-body connection that is still the world’s most sophisticated and powerful health system.  Unlike modern medicine today, which really only covers up often-deeper problems, Ayurveda is more than just a system of treating illness – it “offers a body of wisdom designed to help people stay vibrant and healthy while realizing their full human potential.”  (www.chopra.com)

Ayurveda & Natural Hair Care

There is something about being natural, about wearing our hair in its natural state, that makes us more aware of what we’re putting onto and into our bodies, and how our products are being made.  Now, I am being widely general here because I know that not all naturals are health-conscious, vegetarian, vegan, or into yoga and meditation.  However, there is some parallel between having natural hair and living a more natural lifestyle.  This is why so many naturals are drawn to natural oils and butters for the care and styling of their natural hair.

Ayurvedic hair care is thought to help boost hair growth for long, thick, voluptuous hair by combining the use of native Indian herbs and powders with a healthy natural hair care routine.  These oils, herbs, and powders have nourishing, strengthening, and growth-enhancing properties, and many natural hair product companies have started incorporating them into their ingredients.

Enter Darshana

Sometimes you discover a company that changes the way you look at certain things in your life, whether it be your natural hair routine, product choices, social beliefs, etc.  But Darshana discovered me, and still I feel my life is a little better because of it.  Darius Irani observed his Indian-born father’s use of natural oils in his “exotic” hair care routine, and realized that “Indian women have the most gorgeous, thick, and healthy hair I had ever seen.”  When he realized that there was no ‘quality’ hair oil out there and available for everyone, he and his wife created Darshana.

But then, as his story continues, his wife Shana was diagnosed with an Acoustic Neuroma brain tumor that resulted in brain surgery.  To make a long story short, she is well and even after the surgery she still helps her husband run their business – despite the challenges that come with it and the rehabilitation that can be overwhelming to most.  Their story is an inspiration to me – “she always keeps moving forward.” Darius writes.

Wanting to share your passion with others, to help others, despite your own personal obstacles, is how we should all live.  Their story does not affect my review of the products, but it does have an effect on how I want to live my life.

Darshana the Review, Ask Me About My Hair Blog

The Disclaimer (now you all know I love a good disclaimer – and it is all true, even if a bit tongue-in-cheek):

I received the hair products in this post for free from Darshana to review.  Nevertheless, the product review is my honest and unbiased review of the products based on criteria outlined in this post and on my Curlie Review Explained video.  Darshana has not paid me to review the products in this video; neither have I been coerced, bribed, tricked, blindfolded, kidnapped, or threatened in order to change or alter my review in any way.

How did I come across these products?  Darshana contacted me and asked me to review their products.  Before then, I had never before heard of this company.

What does the product promise?  “Darshana Natural Moisturizing Shampoo and Conditioner will moisturize, condition, and smooth hair of all types. They hydrate, soften, and defrizz your hair while making it look and feel healthier. Our custom blended Indian Ayurvedic botanicals promote healthy hair while helping detangle and condition. It is safe for color treated hair and its 18 Amino Acids will strengthen and protect it from environmental damage.  Our shampoo and conditioner are PH balanced to provide gentle cleansing without stripping your hair and will help close the cuticle after conditioning. This will reduce frizz and flyaways and assist people with low porosity hair. There are no sulfates, parabens, silicones, artificial fragrance, phosphates, phthalates, or animal testing. Darshana Natural Moisturizing Shampoo and Conditioner are a natural alternative for long term hair care.  Darshana Natural Indian Hair Oil will moisturize, condition, and smooth hair of all types with 5-in-1 natural oils in each bottle. The natural formula hydrates hair, reduces frizz, and will leave your hair soft and manageable.”

Shampoo: “Darshana is excited to introduce our Natural Moisturizing Shampoo.  This gently cleansing shampoo will hydrate and soften your hair while making it look and feel healthier.  Our custom blended Indian Ayurvedic botanicals promote healthy hair while helping detangle and condition.  It is safe for color treated hair and its 18 Amino Acids will strengthen and protect it from environmental damage.

Conditioner: “Darshana is excited to introduce our Natural Moisturizing Conditioner.  This moisturizing conditioner will hydrate, soften, and detangle while leaving your hair looking and feeling healthier.  Our custom blended Indian Ayurvedic botanicals promote healthy hair while helping detangle and condition.  It is safe for color treated hair and its 18 Amino Acids will strengthen and protect it from environmental damage.

Hair Oil: “Darshana Natural Indian Hair Oil will rejuvenate, hydrate, and transform your hair.  It is made with an ancient Indian Ayurvedic formula rich in antioxidants, omega oils, and vitamins that will moisturize and restore your hair.  You will see results after just one use. We invite you to experience the Darshana difference!”

These products have been like hair healing in a bottle.  I can truly feel the difference in my strands when I use these products – and less-frizz-curl-definition without gel?  Yes, please!

How does the company suggest you use these products?

Hair Oil: “Before shampooing, apply Darshana to dry hair.  Work in thoroughly from scalp to ends.  Keep in hair for at least 30 minutes to overnight.  Shampoo and condition as normal.  It’s that easy!”

Shampoo: “Massage into hair and scalp, rinse thoroughly.  Follow with Darshana Natural Moisturizing Conditioner.”

Conditioner: “After using Darshana Natural Moisturizing Shampoo, massage into wet hair and work through ends.  Rinse thoroughly.”

How did I use the products?  I use the products as part of my Almost Fall Natural Hair Routine – with just a minor tweak.  Watch me use them in this video.

Did these products do what they said they would do?  Actually, yes!  My hair felt moisturized and soft.  I noticed less frizz with my TWA; but even more awesome was the curl definition I had right out the shower and without any gel.

What did I like about the products?  I love the ingredients – there is something to be said about all natural everything!  And I love the fact that there is no animal testing – that is a big deal to me.

What did I dislike about the products?  At first?  The price.  But after using them all for a month I realized that (1) a little goes a long way, and (2) the ingredient list is worth much more than the price of the product!  So, then, I guess nothing – I disliked nothing.

Would I buy this product?  Yes, I think I would!

Would I recommend this product?  I would, and I know it would be pricey for some.  But if you can’t get all-three products, I would definitely invest in the hair oil.  It will last you a long time, and the benefits from the oils in this bottle far outweigh the price.  You’ll love every drop, in my honest opinion!

Darshana Hair Oil, Ask Me About My Hair Blog

Advertising.  2

I had never heard of this product before until now.  This doesn’t mean they do a bad job at advertising – it just means as a natural hair junkie consumer, I had never heard of this product or seen it anywhere else.

Availability.  3

Darshana is almost exclusively sold online at CurlMart.com, DarshanaBeauty.com, Amazon.com. For our UK customers you can also purchase it at BeautybyZara.com.  Not every one likes to order online, pay shipping, and wait for a package to arrive.  I love a good online order, but I get it.  Maybe soon we will see these awesome products in a store…

Price.  5

At first, between $18 and $38 for hair oil seems expensive, but the value of the ingredients – which are all natural – makes it well worth the price.

Ingredients.  5

Organic Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil, Caprylic Capric Triglyceride (from Coconut Oil), Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil, Citrus Aurantium Dulcis (Orange) Peel Oil, Olea Europaea (Olive) Fruit Oil, Prunus Armeniaca (Apricot) Kernel Oil, Citrus Grandis (Grapefruit) Peel Oil, Ricinuc Communis (Castor) Seed Oil, Acacia Concinna Extract, Arnica Montana Flower Extract, Bacopa Monnieri Extract, Centella Asiatica (Indian Pennywort) Extract, Hibiscus Rosa-Sinensis Extract, Linum Usitatissimum (Linseed) Seed, Phyllanthus Emblica (Indian Gooseberry) Extract, Serenoa Serrulata (Saw Palmetto) Fruit Extract, Trifolium Pratense (Clover) Extract, Trigonella Foenum-Graecum (Fenugreek) Seed Extract, Tocopheryl Acetate (Vitamin E Acetate)

See?  SO worth it!

Consistency.  5

The hair oil is exactly the consistency of an oil – it does not turn solid in cooler temperatures.

Scent.  5

A light lemony scent.  Surprisingly delightful because I expected a (this is a stereotype but not meant as an offense) ‘heavier Indian herbal’ scent.  I LOVE those scents, but was not disappointed.

Application.  5

Easy.  Pour it out, rub it in, cover it up, and you’re done.

Effects.  5

Soft.  Literally soft and frizz-free hair.

Longevity.  5

As long as a week of soft hair after using the oil, shampoo, and conditioner.  If I just use the oil alone, my hair is very soft and not super oily.

Overall Impression.  5

Very impressed!  I love this oil and will continue using it as a prepoo and after wash moisturizer.
