NAPPY REVIEW: Shea Moisture Hair Color System

Shea Moisture Haircolor

Shea Moisture.  What can I say that I haven’t already said about the Raw Shea Butter line?  It is my absolute fav.or.ite product for my fall protective styling and I can’t get enough of it!  So I’m already posting the video series on each of the products in the line – showing how I use them in conjunction with one another and giving my review of how they worked in my hair.  Now I will give you my written word on the products beginning with the first step all the way to the last.  Here is my Nappy Review:

Shea Moisture Raw Shea Butter Fall Routine

Step One: Shea Moisture Hair Color System

This is another perfect example of my all-or-nothing attitude when it comes to hair systems.  I blame Shea Moisture – I mean, I was doing just fine with the shampoo, hair masque, and conditioner when they decided to add three (four?) new products to the line.  So of course I had to check them out… what else can expect from a product junky?  As I stated in my last review, “When I try something, I go all in.  I mean all. into. a. system.  That is what I did here – I decided that if I was going to do this, I may as well do it right.  Right?  Right!”

So again I got caught up in the wonderment that is Target and left with the complete Shea Moisture Raw Shea Butter system.   Before leaving, however, I turned and saw the lineup of hair color boxes that almost took my breath away.  Well, again.  And the thought that I heard the loudest in my head was, ‘well, you already have an armload of Shea Moisture products to try; why not just get the hair color, too?’  I’m pretty sure this is how the serpent tripped Eve up.  And I said I could never fall for it like she did.  Apparently MY apple is Shea Moisture.  LOL!!!  Anyhoo…I digress… here is my review of the hair color (I used it as step one in my whole process):

Why did I buy this product?

It’s Shea Moisture.  That’s all.  lol

Where can you get it?

Target.  As far as I know this is the only place you can purchase the hair color system.

How was the packaging?

The box was BEAUTIFUL!!!  The artwork on the box is just magnificent and that is the first thing I noticed.  Here is what the owner says about the Hair Color system on their Facebook page:

ART. SCIENCE. NATURE. For the cover art of our new Ammonia-Free SheaMoisture Hair Color System, we commissioned a series of original water color paintings by Maryland artist Mike Jamal. “It was important to us in creating the art for our new hair color packaging to represent our community in a way that encompasses all our individualism and beauty,” says Creative Director Jullanar Barron, SheaMoisture Creative Director since 2001. “We want you to see yourself when you look at a box of our hair color.” Here are the 12 packages.

There is a flap that you can open to read about the history of the company and the product.  One side of the box lists the standard ingredients, and the other shows you what all comes in the box.  As for the inside of the box… well that is another plus-positive.  A pouch!  Who knew one could get so excited over a pouch… but it contains more goodies than just the usual color, developer and weak packet of conditioner that can only be used on one section of my hair!

The Pouch:

Color Creme
Developer Creme
Bottle tip for applying the color straight from the bottle
Raw Shea Butter Moisture Retention Shampoo
Raw Shea Butter Restorative Conditioner
Raw Shea Butter Finishing Elixir
Application brush
Instruction Packet

What are the ingredients?

The ingredients are listed on the box for each item in the box.  It’s a lot and I don’t want to type it all here!  But here are the main ingredients:

• Made with natural and certified organic ingredients.
• Shea Butter deeply moisturizes while conditioning hair and scalp.
• Soy Protein rebuilds and strengthens hair.
• Flax Seed Oil enhances the shine of hair.

What is the consistency of the product?

Once shaken the hair color is creamy – just like any other.

How does it smell?

And this is the surprise… it actually smells… nice.  I mean most hair colors succeed in burning my nose hairs so I don’t have to worry about trimming; but this stuff has a very nice NON-chemical yet pleasant smell.  Who knew?  And yet, I thought as I put it on that because my bathroom wasn’t full of toxic fumes it wouldn’t really color my hair that great…

What does it promise?

“SheaMoisture’s Moisture-Rich, Ammonia-Free Hair Color System gently, yet effectively, colors your hair for a softer, silkier and healthier appearance. A permanent, no-drip formula which delivers vibrant color, body and shine. Provides gray coverage.”

How does the company suggest you use this product?

Honestly, this is really no different than most hair colors.  They do give you two choices – brush application, or bottle.  I used the tip of the bottle provided in the pouch to apply my color.  The brush is sooo cute, though!  lol

How did I use this product?

Just as I was told!  lol  Four sections… apply… wait… rinse.

Did this product do what it said it would do?

…but it did.  And so great!  I’ll tell you that the price gave me a slight eye-twitch when I got to the cash register; but for all that comes in that box it is well worth the money!  Oh, and usually I have to purchase to boxes of hair color to cover all this hair.  I refused to spend $30 and change for hair color (no matter how much I love Shea Moisture! lol).  I didn’t need to.  Not even a little bit.  This bottle covered MY. WHOLE. HEAD. plus some.  I had to keep unraveling each section and applying more color to get rid of it all (yes, I was going to use every drop!).  I had to do that at least three times for each section.

And then I thought, ‘oh Lord, I will never get all of this washed out.’  Wrong again!  I didn’t have to spend all afternoon with my head turned upside down over my shower.  The water ran clear in a matter of minutes!

I am amazed at this product.  And hair color is always just ‘meh’ for me.

How long does it last?

It is a permanent color… so I’m assuming until my next gray hair pops up?  ha.  No, I think this will last a while.  At least I don’t plan on coloring again until next summer, IF I even do it then…

So what did I like about it?

Wow… what didn’t I love about this hair color??  The box… the artwork… the pouch inside… all the stuff that came with the hair color… that the gloves were thick and didn’t rip easily… the color coverage (oh, the coverage!!!)… getting products that should be used after the color – and getting enough to use on my whole head, twice!… the smell (or I should say the lack-of)… how soft my hair feels after washing out the color…

Let’s talk about that for a second.  My favorite color (ONLY because I get the best coverage and darkest black for the price) has always been Feria.  But for any of you who have used Feria, you know that the peroxide smell will knock out a small dog.  Seriously.  I don’t let me doggy stay in the room when I use Feria.  And I have no nose hairs when I’m done!  lol  But I had to use two boxes last time I used Feria.  Either way, my hair ALWAYS felt like straw after using Feria.  ALWAYS.  And that teaspoon of conditioner?  SMH.  Never helps.  So before going to wash out She a Moisture I just knew I was going to have to sleep with the Hair Masque in my hair to get it back to soft; however, when I washed out the color my hair felt soft right away!  And detangling was an absolute BREEZE.  Can we say my mouth stayed open throughout this whole process?!  I. LOVE. THIS. HAIR COLOR.

What did I not like about it?

Nothing, except that I have to order. everything. to this god-forsaken sticks-boro!  Or drive an hour to pick it up from Target.  I chose to drive this time – ‘ain’t nobody got time fa’ waiting for products in the mail!  I’m STILL waiting on some shoes I ordered; by the time they get here they’ll be out of season!  (long, hard exhale).  But I digress…

Would I buy it again?

Did you hear that?  It was a resounding ‘YES!’  This is my new hair color brand.

(But it is hair color… so that means I won’t be purchasing it that often.)

Would I recommend this product?

YES! YES! YES!  If you’re in the market to color… pick a color, go to Target, and get Shea Moisture.  You will not be disappointed!
